Proper ADSL finally

Proper ADSL finally

In the 7 or 8 years I’ve been living in the UK I’ve never been near a fast ADSL exchange, this has all now changed since moving last week and now I can get a BE link, it really is amazing to go from a shoddy 2 Mbit link to 17ish one, see below.

I only activated it this morning, so yet to see if it will be more stable than my previous link which used to drop 3 to 5 times daily, but hopefully now I’ll be abe to play Xbox games while my partner browse stuff, something which previously was totally out of the question.

Passport

Today my UK passport finally arrived, I did have to go for an interview where they re-established that I am who I say I am.

The interview was quite interesting, when I went to write my Britishness Test there were only 4 or so other people at the test and I kind of looked at that as an indication that perhaps, as usual, there is more hype in the media related to immigration than is really needed.

They arrange the interview meetings in blocks of 45 minutes and only allow you in 10 minutes before your block start, so you can know who is in there are all people who are applying for their first passport.  I went to the interview center in Elephant & Castle, its a fairly big facility with almost 30 interview cubicles, in my 45 minutes block there were about 80 or so people waiting for the interview.

This kind of brought it home a bit more that yes really there is a massive immigration problem, the interview centers are open 6 days a week and if they are usually anywhere near as busy as when I went – noon on a Friday – then I’d say the rate of immigration is totally unsustainable.  It is easier to visualize the problem in a setting like this than to read some big figure in a news paper.

The interview itself was very professionally done, the woman who interviewed me were friendly, thorough and I think the whole thing was actually pretty enjoyable apart from the obvious inconvenience involved.  They mostly asked me to confirm what I already filled in on my application forms but also some extra things like what is my Car Registration, what bank accounts I have and when they were opened.  It was all simple stuff and went really quick.

British Citizenship

British Citizenship

I previously mentioned that got a letter confirming it all went well with my application for naturalisation, the whole process is now more or less done.

I had the ceremony last Thursday and around 11:24 in the morning the Mayor of Greenwich handed me my certificate so I am now all done with that and a full Citizen of the United Kingdom.  I arrived here on the 2nd of Feb 2002 and became a citizen on the 7th of Feb 2008.  I could have applied last year in March already and probably would have been done with it all around September but I was procrastinating and eventually the noise about the reforms in the immigration laws gave me the kick I needed to complete it.

The biggest advantage I’ll see immediately is of course the passport, traveling as a South African – or in fact being a South African out of South Africa – is such a liability your whole life is just tough, massive headache of visas, immigration time wasting etcetc, endless hassle.  In tourist visas alone I spent about GBP500 in the last few years never mind all the time wasted in getting those and even just in queuing in the non EU citizen lines at airports, all gone now!  I’ve also had to struggle quite a lot with tenancy agreements for flats that I rent etc as I was never sure if I’ll even be in the country for the year they want you to sign, so had to always get 6 month break clauses put in etc.

This is a part of the certificate I received during the ceremony:

Today I’ll apply for my first UK passport, it should come through in about 2 weeks unfortunately just too late to attend FOSDEM.

The process for applying for citizenship is all hyped up to be this fantastic experience for applicants, a great introduction to the country and its people.  This is done through the test you need to pass and a formal ceremony that even includes singing God Save The Queen.

Overall I’d say the whole thing just left me cold, personally I see little point to most of the hoops I had to jump through.  I have to say though that the test has some value – it tests that you have a grasp of English and in that function its a success so I’d keep it for that reason.  The ceremonies though? waste of time and money in my eye.

Excellent service from Comet

I bought a Sagem PVR6200T Freeview PVR back in August from Comet in Greenwich.
The device was OK at best, it was noisy and a bit slow to respond sometimes, never coped well with playback of something while recording something else and often just crashed randomly. This was after a software upgrade that took away the repeatable crashes and reboots leaving just the random ones.
Most annoyingly it’s only means of upgrade was Over The Air broadcasts so even though a upgrade was out to fix some of my problems I couldn’t download it and fix them, I had to wait for Sagem to schedule a OTA again.
Night before last it’s HDD packed up – much ticking and retry sounding noises at bootup and it never displayed anything on the screen.
I immediately thought it is going to be hell to replace this thing, probably involve me sending it back to Sagem myself, being without a PVR for months and then getting a refurb version of the same crap back. Had a look on the Comet site and they said one can just bring it back to them for repairs – so still much waiting?
I drove to the store I got it from – Comet Greenwich about 10 mins from me – and put it on the counter with a very quick explanation of what was going on. The guy behind the desk just looked at it to ensure all the bits where there and asked me if I wanted the same type again or a different one for replacement? I was shocked it was totally painless, no hassles, no questions asked, just go pick a new one.
So I looked at the various options and settled for a Humax PVR-9200T – had to pay the 20 pound price difference – my first impressions are that this is a great bit of kit. It’s fast, the UI is much prettier, it supports upgrading via RS232 port and OTA. It has a USB port and some software that lets you download recorded video to a PC for viewing. It also has double the storage of the old Sagem and a 2 year warranty.
So major kudos to Comet for getting customer service right, totally unexpected and unique in my experience with high street electronics places. I’ve bought many things from them in the past this is the first one thats broken, but it does inspire confidence.

UK Photographers Rights

There has been a bit of noise in the press about the His Royal Idiot The Mayor of London putting up signs all over warning parents to be on the lookout for photographers in public places taking pics of their sprog and that these may be Pedophiles.
While it’s fair that photos may be abused I think this will also cause a general witch hunt of photographers in public places, it is for example impossible to take any kind of wide photo of any touristy area in London without getting at least a small amount of kids in the scene, I suspect we’ll be hearing lots of horror stories of innocent photographers being harassed as a result.
Previously I blogged about a flyer made to apply to the US laws regarding photography and mentioned how no such thing exists for the UK, well it does now and can be found here

The guide was written by Linda Macpherson LL.B, Dip.L.P., LL.M, who is a lecturer in law at Heriot Watt University, with particular experience in Information Technology Law, Intellectual Property Law and Media Law.

Nice one.

Movie Classifications

I’m always intrigued by the classifications of movies on the websites of cinemas here, you can almost use them to decide what to see never mind the titles of the movies.
From the movies currently showing at my local cinema:
Contains strong bloody violence
Contains moderate fantasy violence and scary scenes
Contains mild bad language
Contains strong language, horror and violence
Contains very strong language and drug use
Contains strong bloody violence
Contains moderate language and sex references
Contains moderate fantasy violence and scary scenes
Contains mild comic action violence
Contains one scene of drug use
All the ‘strong bloody violence’ movies are on my list of movies to watch, great.

Online DVD Rental

I have been trying out the Blockbuster Unlimited DVD Rental system for a few months, it is basically a DVD rental by post system, no return-by dates, 3 DVD’s at a time as many as you can fit in for GBP13 a month.
The service it self is great, very few scratched disks, disks always arrive promptly, packaging is well done etc. The problem comes with their web interface though, it really leaves much to be desired.
Rather than go into a list of issues that I have with it, I’ll mention some of the good things about Screen Select who I will be using from now on.
I thought I’d stick with Blockbuster out of loyalty, they are good as I said, they gave me a month free trial and they deserve my business. However over time I realized that a major part of this business is the user experience, and that isn’t just about the movies, it’s about managing your account as well.
So I have tonight manually moved the 60 odd movies I had on my wish list at Blockbuster over to Screen Select and in the process I got the hang of their user interface and so forth. It really is great, I think the biggest testament to how good is the fact that I have grown my list to 180 during the night where with Blockbuster I was running out of stuff to add! The systems both work by browsing categories and making recommendations, so clearly actually finding stuff to watch is much easier with Screen Select for me.
So the list of good things about Screen Select:

  • Lots of Customer Reviews, reviewers are also rated and you can pull out all reviews by someone you notice who has a similar taste as you.
  • While browsing the various categories and search results, movies already on your list are easily identifiable. You still see the movies in the search results, but instead of a ‘Add’ option you have a ‘Remove’ option for those on your list.
  • Movies that you are not interested in or have seen before can easily be hidden from recommended listings, you can however still search for them by name/actor/director etc.
  • The quality of the recommendations sections are top notch, and according to them it improves as you rate movies you have seen.
  • Good quality monthly newsletters, with archives available including things like Actor Of The Month etc.
  • Shows upcoming releases clearly, even shows movies currently on the movie circuit, so you can easily mark those things you do not want to waste money on at the cinema but still wish to see – those ‘DVD Movies’.
  • It seems Screen Select has a much bigger selection, good Anime etc.
  • They carry adult titles, not only porn but other stuff that’s rated R18 that was hard to find on Blockbuster, turns out quite a few of the movies I wanted to see fell in the adult category but not Porn and Blockbuster just didn’t bother stocking those. Screen Select limits access to those items with a PIN, good if you have kids around.
  • The interface has no bugs, even in Firefox. Blockbuster has all sorts of annoying ‘features’ to get used too.
  • The interface works intuitively, if you add a movie it brings you right back to your search results to the next movie, removing the one you added from the search results. Other things like the rating system works easily and has quite a bit of Javascript to make things go smoothly. A nice and modern interface.

So think of the above list, and then think of a online DVD store without any of them, thats Blockbuster. I cannot list the shortcomings of their interface, they simply have to start fresh and do a good job of it.
I will stick to Screen Select, and I hope the actual DVD delivery aspect of their service live up to what I got used to at Blockbuster.

Schengen Visa Hell

15 European countries belong to the list of Shengen countries, the basic idea is that there are little or no border control between them, one visa fits all.
This is a great idea and really makes European travel very easy. The problem is that the criteria for getting a Shengen visa is up to the individual countries. As anyone who knows anything of the European community can tell you they absolutely love bureaucracy . Entry requirements range from the impossible to simple depending on who you are, where you are going and what country you are from.
For South Africans in the UK it is mostly easy, you get a French Schengen visa, go to France usually using the Eurostar to Paris and get the stamp there. Once you have that you can go anywhere in the 15 countries for the duration of your visa. The problem is of cource the fact that you have to deal with the French visa people. While they are the easiest to get of the lot it is still hell.
I remember standing outside in the freezing cold 3 mornings in a row at 7am waiting for the doors to open at 10am. Only on the 3rd morning did I even make it inside the main building, I was there till 3pm when I finally got leave to remain in the Schengen countries for 6 days! These days it is all by appointment, via a phone call that costs £1.50 per minute and can last a long time, I have never actually held on the phone long enough to get any use out of the line but I hear it can take 10 to 15 minutes.
It is now easier, you can send a agent on your behalf though there are only a handful of agencies who are allowed in. It used to be that the default answer to this was to just use 1st Contact. Their service was great, personal, friendly, they gave advice over the phone and they were affordable. This has all changed now. They do not speak to you over the phone, they won’t see you, it takes weeks to get a visa out of them and the whole experience is just really crap, I would rather queue myself than deal with 1st Contact again.
A friend told me about Mobile Visa Services who does a fantastic service. They are clearly geared at busy people. They provide very friendly advice over the phone and know what they are talking about. Once you decide to use them they will come fetch the passport from you and other documents and do the leg work, then bring it back to your office. You do pay a bit extra, £55 for the service they offer and £25 for the French but I can recommend them for anyone who wants to get a Visa without hassle. In this case I gave them my passport on Monday and had it back today, amasing.

Guy Fawkes

Guy Fawkes

I tried to go see some fireworks last night but they started a bit early to get to on time so tonight there were some more and this time very conveniently close to my house. The organizers claimed it was the biggest free fireworks display in England and I can easily believe that.

It went on for a whole 18 minutes and was absolutely spectacular. They expected 30 000 to 40 000 people would show up, I am sure there were more.
Some photos that I took can be seen here.
