I have not been using my pocket pc for a long time now, since I started using Sunbird because no way exist to sync the two.
Over the weekend I thought I'd have another troll through the net and came across two good things.
The first is a repository of free Pocket PC software, well worth a look.
The 2nd is a promising one way syncing system for ics files -> Pocket Outlook. It is called KCal and can take ics files and replace all your existing calendar entries with what is in the ics file.
So this is good if you do all your entering of events in Sunbird and just need a mobile copy of it, no syncing back to Sunbird. This is a good start and probably pretty much exactly what I need.
I did some testing, it works ok for non recurring events but it has a problem with recurring events. I sent the author some feedback on this and he already responded that he will fix this in the next release. I also asked if it were possible to support loading more than one ics file at sync time.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I absolutely hate Outlook (with a passion) and I'm no fan of ActiveSync either (tends to break things and even at 3.8, it's still buggy as hell).
Unfortunately, I really need two-way synchronization. I enter a lot of stuff while I'm on the move. And I do need my PC and mc PPC to be in sync.
One thing that I found interesting is the sync4j Project. It's basically an open-source implementation of an alternative synching protocol. It's written in Java so it's pretty much platform independant. For some reason, it doesn't seem to work with my PPC though.
Maybe integrating sync4j into Sunbird would allow for two-way synchronization... *crosses fingers*
Wow - thanks for the KCal recommendation. I came across your webpage via a Google search. KCal lets me synchronise my Toshiba e400 with Sunbird without any problems! Not too bothered about syncing back to Sunbird, as I do most of my entries on the PC. Calendar/task management syncing with the Pocket PC, has been my only reason up till now to keep using Outlook. Not anymore! Thanks!
What was the problem with Sync4j? Did you contacted one of the user lists?
Stefano
Try this:

Full synchronisation
I also have a PPC and use Sunbird..
But I would need a 2way sync - has there been any progress up to now??
Thanks,
nic
seems that the pocket pc sync4j client and the thunderbird extenstion for sync4j would allow this to all work and it's all existing, except i can't test it as sync4j hates my older pocket pc (pocket pc 2002_.
This pocket pc freeware and software archive worth a look too
